CBD and the Endocannabiniod system

In September 2017, I never in my life had heard about the Endocannabiniod system and only vaguely had heard about CBD. If someone had just come up to me and asked what I knew about the ECS I would’ve laughed and said, that’s not a real thing… Is it?

My how things have changed since then. Hi there. I am Rick Kegresse; together with my wife Katie we are Hemping for Life. Contact details are at the end of this article.

For many years Katie has been in constant pain with joint and connective tissue issues as well as a broken foot and many common fears. I myself have high stress, blood pressure that is controlled with Bystolic and nasty gut issues. That all changed when CBD oil was given to us by our daughter, Jessica. That day changed our lives.

Since then Katie had not needed a cane to walk with or my help to get up and down stairs, up from the couch, or in and out of a car. She has gone to the dentist with reduced anxiety. She also participates in many activities that she had to give up years prior due to a lack of mobility.

I am calmer and am able to go now places without fear that I might have to run to the bathroom.

WHY? What is CBD doing? How does it work? It all has to do with the Endocannabiniod system and homeostasis. I am not a doctor and make no claims to cure or diagnose or treat any disease or malady. I am talking about what happened in my life and according to numerous studies why it works like it does.

I learned over the months from several places including the company I represent CBD products for. You can also reference from these sites for yourself.

Our bodies want Homeostasis

Our body is hard at work everyday trying to maintain balance, also known as homeostasis.

We’ve got multiple systems in our bodies, and every system has polarity built in. One of these systems is our neural network which has positive and negative charges in our nerves that trigger our muscles to contract or relax. Imagine that one system being out of whack and the problems it would create. Twitching, loss of bowel control, heart attack, etc… The list is long and scary.

The pH in various parts of our body spans the whole pH scale, from very acidic to very alkaline.

Even our endocrine system can be catabolic, which means to break down, or anabolic, which means to build up.

So in essence, every aspect of human physiology is constantly and dynamically striving for balance.

And your metabolism is, as well.

So our body is constantly doing the dance; yin and yang, expanding and contracting, degenerating and regenerating, in flow and out flow….

Homeostasis is at the core of health. However, in our lives today, our homeostasis is a bit skewed.

We are living in a toxic world and our bodies are not able to maintain the optimal homeostasis.

But because our bodies are so resilient, they are able to shift and still function in suboptimal environments.

We are able to adjust and adapt, and it is this flexibility and resilience that we lose as autoimmune patients.

All body systems have to communicate, and they do so by way of signaling molecules.

Pharmaceutical drugs act in the body by further altering our homeostasis to decrease a specific symptom, but this often results in unintended consequences.

So what happens? If you take one medication, you often need more to counter the effects of the meds you were initially placed on.

Ultimately, when taking medications long term, they end up altering our physiology so much so that we now need meds to run functionally.

But the meds don’t allow you to achieve optimal functionality, rather, they keep you at declining functionality.

How Does CBD Work in Our Body?

It just so happens that CBD physiologically keeps our body in balance, promoting optimal function by acting as an agonist (basically cleaning the receptors, see next).

The endocannabinoid system in our body that pays a major part in every other system in the body. This network of cells contains receptors, and these receptors are the most prevalent type of receptors throughout the body.

Dr. Rafael Mechoulam at Hebrew University in Israel discovered the endocannabinoid system.

We also have our own cannabinoids in our bodies: Anandamide and 2AG.

Meditation promotes the bliss molecule anandamide.

Breastfeeding promotes 2AG.

Receptors for CBD travel to the nucleus, where our cells are controlled and from there can impact our entire physiology.

They bind to chromosomes and affect our DNA code, which runs our physiology.

Which Proteins are Made as a Result of the Influence of CBD in Our Body?

Genes code for various proteins in the body.

It just so happens that CBD modulates the transcription of over 1100 genes that activate the signaling molecules that naturally reduce inflammation in our central nervous system and throughout our immune system.

Signaling molecules include:

  • Neurotransmitters (nervous system)
  • Hormones (endocrine system)
  • Cytokines (immune system)

CBD restores homeostasis to both our immune and central nervous system:

  • Promotes up-regulation of anti-inflammatory biochemicals, known as GABA
    • Brings calmness
  • Promotes down-regulation of inflammatory biochemicals, known as Glutamate
    • Reduces over excitation

Therefore our body returns to homeostasis.

So instead of having so many side effects from pharmaceuticals, CBD oil may just be the thing to keep our bodies in balance.

Remember, our homeostasis results from a cascade of biochemical reactions on the entire immune and physiological system, including but not limited to:

  • Cardiovascular system
  • Central nervous system
  • Immune system
  • Bone marrow
  • Spleen
  • Bladder
  • Lymph System

So why is this important?

If you are alive nowadays, you’re inflamed. No one is exempt.

We all have some degree of toxic overload.

Many prevalent conditions today didn’t exist @ 100 years ago. Most likely we’ve seen these due to increasing toxins in the environment and because Hemp and Marijuana had been removed from the food chain about the same time. Without the protection of this outside source of CBD outside environmental issues have caused great changes to the human population.

This toxic load can cause a degradation in our gut lining and through a cascade of biochemical reactions in our body, brain inflammation results, causing brain fog, epilepsy, anxiety, PTSD, and insomnia.

Additionally, immune dysfunction as a result of toxic load can lead to the autoimmune conditions we’re so familiar with… like lupus, Arthritis, EDS, fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, Crohns, IBS and so much more .

Such conditions were so rare in the past. But due to ongoing insult to our system, these conditions are on the rise.

CBD has provided tremendous relief and healing for thousands of people and has been widely studied by multiple universities, research facilities and governments for many decades now.

Because health is achieved through physiological homeostasis, CBD seems like a great option for someone seeking a safe alternative to pharmaceuticals.

CBD will help with pain, as well as promote the body’s ability to naturally detoxify and heal, all while supporting our body’s overall systemic homeostasis.

CBD Dosing

  1. Decide on the delivery method. Cannabis oil is available in sprays, capsules, edibles and other products. Always look for a CO2 extracted cbd that is free of chemicals and impurities. Request documentation as proof. If the company can’t give you documentation then stay away.
  2. Begin slowly, low dose to start. See chart below.
  3. Spread dosing throughout the day.
  4. Use consistent dose and ratio for several days, see how you do and adjust accordingly.
  5. Don’t overdo it. “Less is more” is the case with cannabis. If you experience headaches, tiredness or dry mouth drink more water and lower your serving for a few days.
  6. Some people experience Herxheimer-effect. This is detoxification and goes away after a short period of time. Usually under a week.
  7. As with any change in diet it may be beneficial to consult your health care provider.
